Privacy and security training and resources

OntarioMD (OMD) offers extensive online and in-person privacy and security training specifically targeted to the community. We have trained more than 18,000 clinicians and their staff over the past 10 years.

OMD updates its FREE online courses regularly to ensure valuable learning resources are always available to clinicians. To take the privacy and security training for the first time, or complete your recommended annual refresher, please visit https://learning.ontariomd.ca/

NOTE for community-based clinicians: The OMD Privacy & Security Training for the Healthcare Sector course is mandatory to access provincial digital health services such as Health Report Manager (HRM®) and the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS).

Overview

Training to protect what matters most: your patient and practice data

OMD online Privacy and Security Training offers two free comprehensive privacy and security courses for physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and clinic staff in any care setting. Healthcare organizations now require their staff to take the training every year. The courses are available in English and French and include helpful resources and tools for more in-depth learning. At the end of each course, you'll receive a certificate of completion. More than 11,000 users have taken the training with a 90% satisfaction rate.

Focuses on key privacy and cybersecurity issues aimed at clinicians and clinic staff in primary and acute care settings. The course has been updated to include your legal and professional obligations when using AI tools. It covers privacy legislation, e.g., the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), the obligations of health information custodians (HICs), the do's and don'ts for protecting personal health information (PHI) to prevent privacy and security incidents, and cybersecurity tips and scenarios informed by real-world clinician experiences.   


Virtual Care Privacy & Security Training 

Covers what primary care clinicians need to know about privacy and security when delivering virtual care, including applicable legislation, consent requirements, and privacy policies in the context of virtual care.

How to access the courses

  1. Click the 'Take the training now' button. 
  2. Log into your account with your username and password. 
    If you don't have an account, follow the steps to create one.
  3. Click the 'Begin' button for the course you want to complete.
    Go through each course at your own pace. You can stop and pick up where you left off at any time.
  4. Print your certificate and keep it as proof of training and a reminder to retake the course next year.

Earn Certificates and CME Credits 

Complete both courses a receive a certificate for each one. They are proof that you have successfully completed the training. Keep them as a reminder to take the training again next year to fulfill your annual privacy and security training requirements, and to keep up with leading practices and the latest cyber threats.  

Family physicians: Receive Mainpro+ credits from the College of Family Physicians of Canada's (CFPC) Ontario Chapter by completing both courses. Claim the credits on the CFPC website

Specialists: Receive credits under the Royal College Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program as a Section 2: Personal Learning Project for each course. Claim the credits by recording these courses in the MAINPORT ePortfolio on the Royal College's website and complete at least one learning outcome.  

Other clinicians and staff: Create an account to take the courses if you are a health professional or administrative staff working in a clinical setting.
